Toronto 2019 – As part of BMO’s National Volunteer Day event, Skills for Change hosted a Mentoring & Networking Event with BMO employees.
On June 11, Skills for Change hosted a Mentoring and Networking Event in partnership with BMO. The event was held as part of BMO’s annual National Volunteer Day. Every June, BMO Volunteer Day gives employees the opportunity to give back to their community.
BMO Volunteer Day brings together nearly 5,000 employees, collectively dedicating thousands of service hours to local nonprofits that need that extra infusion of people power to complete key projects (BMO, 2019).
Here at Skills for Change, we were thrilled to be one of the many organizations across North America who partnered up with BMO for a service project initiative. Sixteen volunteers took on the role of mentors at our Mentoring and Networking event. Volunteers took time to share their expertize surrounding the financial industry and their different designations to small groups. Topics covered included:
-
Networking techniques
-
Tips and tricks related to job search
-
Resume and interview preparation tips
-
Career path advice
The event saw approximately 100 attendees and received great feedback from those involved. In addition to group mentoring, the volunteers also spoke with individuals who had more specific questions one on one. The attendees went home with great advice that they could apply to their professional development and the volunteers felt the satisfaction of knowing that the knowledge they shared helped others to learn and grow. Participants were also given time to network and get to know each other throughout the day.
Thank you to all the BMO volunteers and attendees for making the Mentoring and Networking Event a success!
Here at Skills for Change, we believe that both networking and mentoring are important for career and personal growth.
