Women Connecting with Women

This program is open to anyone who is woman-identified.  

Women Connecting with Women addresses the systemic issues of newcomer women who face multi-barriers. The program provides newcomer women with tools and resources to reduce social isolation, increase self-esteem, increase their networks and build confidence. The program also provides access to one on one counselling/crisis counselling, support groups, mentoring, language enhancement and life-skills training. The end goal is for newcomer women to feel empowered and to support their social and economic integration in the Canadian Society.

Join us for free weekly workshops every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-12pm.
  • Child minding services available on site.
  • Refreshments will be provided
  • TTC tokens offered to all events attendees
Free personal counselling is available for women (immigrants, refugees and newcomers).

Tuesday, Oct 12th: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.: Importance of recognizing self-worth and how to cultivate it
This is an interactive workshop for all women and non-binary people aimed to empower you to make lasting change in your life and to give you the tools to do so. Self-worth is a key tool in providing motivation to pursue your goals as well as in maintaining your well-being. Without recognizing your self-worth, it is difficult to recognize when to advocate for yourself and why you should be advocating for yourself. Together we will go through the meaning of self-worth, strategies to improve your ability to recognize it as well as how it applies to improving your everyday life.

Tuesday, Oct 12th: 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.: Self-awareness, personality type and Career Success
In this session our guest speaker will discuss how to increase self awareness, how to use that awareness to find the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI), and how to use that knowledge to enhance career outcomes and choose job duties that best suit the individual. During this workshop, participants will be encouraged to explore self confidence and self care and be empowered to enhance their success with their own internal strength. The presentation will include handouts, activity sheets and individual activities for participants.

Presenter bio: Kathleen is an award-winning educator and curriculum developer in Community Services post-secondary programs, as well as an active member of the social service community in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Kathleen’s passion is educating workers and volunteers to enhance their empathic, empowerment, and advocacy skills. Kathleen delivers community workshops and certifications to empower workers to show up effectively in their communities.

METRAC: Action on Violence is a not-for-profit, community-based organization that works to end violence against women, youth, children, and non-binary people. June 15th (2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.): Creative Expression of Emotions (Inspired by Art Therapy) for seniors

This is a virtual workshop for seniors (50 years+), to join a supportive group.

This session will be facilitated by a certified counsellor. The content is focused on how arts and creative activities can be used to help someone process and express their emotions including difficult emotions, reduce and manage their stress, and improve their well-being. Fun activities will be included, and participation/group discussion will be optional. If you are interested, you can share your artwork and talk about it. Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the family—which includes all primary caregivers—have a key role in supporting their children’s social and emotional development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The pandemic has impacted many individuals including parents greatly. Parents have been experiencing more stress than before because they have been dealing with new challenges related to the COVID-19 situation in addition to the usual challenges of raising healthy and happy children and teenagers. In order to be there for your children, it is also important to make time to take care of yourself.

Skills for Change “Wellness and Support” program will be hosting a series of virtual workshops in February and March to explore and help you understand different available theories and interventions to support parents strengthen their parenting skills, focusing on childhood and adolescence. In these sessions, we will provide psychoeducational workshops and group sessions related to parenting skills.

Skills-building: Healthcare Edition – March 25, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
An appointment with your doctor or another healthcare professional can be confusing and overwhelming at times. That’s why we’ve created this interactive workshop! We will review what you can expect from a visit at a doctor’s office, as well as how to advocate for yourself during healthcare appointments. We’ll also explore skills to find, understand, and use information to help make health-related decisions.  Finally, we’ll provide you with some helpful health tools and resources that you can use anytime! The final portion of the workshop will feature a Q&A session, where we will be happy to answer your questions.
