GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
With 37 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected non-profit with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. Skills for Change provides multi-sited employment, job skills, career exploration through mentoring and entrepreneurship, job development, and language and settlement programs and services throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas.
Reporting to the Manager, Programs and Services this role involves coaching and counselling individuals with crisis situations. Vocational Rehabilitation Counsellor assesses individuals’ interests, skills, abilities and work readiness, finds and advises individuals with employment opportunities. Supports and provides skill development to individuals’ in areas to obtaining and retaining employment. Provides individual care and guidance consistent with the needs of an individual group with mental health issues, behavioural challenges, or addictions.
The ideal candidate has:
- Significant experience working with vulnerable and marginalized populations and clients facing multiple barriers and limitations including newcomers, racialized individuals, justice system adjacent, disabled, injured etc.;
- Knowledge of the Code of Ethics for Rehabilitation Counsellors;
- Extensive experience in crisis intervention theories and methods to safely and effectively work with clients in crisis;
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to high standards of culturally responsive service delivery within an anti-racism and anti-oppression framework;
- Demonstrated ability in using discretion in dealing with highly sensitive and confidential issues;
- Excellent oral and written English communication skills;
- Proficient in planning, implementing and evaluating group activities;
- Good organizational skills, ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of accuracy;
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if required;
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Conduct vocational assessments including the delivery and interpretation of standardized testing and vocational rehabilitative counseling to determine suitable occupations based on client limitations and barriers;
- Analyse clients’ capabilities and expectations related to life activities through observation, interviews and formal assessments;
- Develop individual intervention plans to address unique needs and support rehabilitation of clients with multiple barriers and limitations including socio-economic, ethnic, visible and non-visible disabilities, criminal records, housing, mental illness, addiction etc.;
- Establish and maintain collaborative, professional relationships with various stakeholders including employers and community health care providers to determine services needed via referral and to address clients’ needs related to work and independent living;
- Work with employers to provide accommodation and other interventions to support employees with visible and non-visible disabilities, injuries, chronic illness, addiction etc.;
- Work closely with employers to provide support and make preparations for clients’ integration/reintegration into the workforce and advocate in cases of employment or workplace discrimination;
- Conduct psychosocial crisis intervention including supportive counselling, and assistance in the development of a recovery plan;
- Assist clients in identifying areas of need and goal development, ensuring goals are attainable and time specific, and that the client plays an integral role in the decision-making process to support independent living;
- Work in collaboration with SfC stakeholders to assist participants to obtain and maintain paid and unpaid work/education, arranges for and coordinates resources;
- Provide crisis intervention services through telephone, video conferencing or face-to-face contact, in the client’s preferred environment;
- Facilitate the development of critical work skills necessary to maintain work such as problem solving, conflict resolution, harm reduction, relapse prevention, medication management and other life skills as appropriate. Using a hands-on approach to encourage and motivate, provide life skills training as needed;
- Provide on-site job coaching to newly hired/placed participants; and where necessary identify and support accommodations required to make work-sites accessible to clients;
- Review trends in the local labour market, career planning and development for persons facing barriers and limitations to employment;
- Develop, plan and facilitate employment support group sessions and wellness workshops in collaboration with other SfC programs and community partners;
- Coordinate services with other SfC programs and services to ensure clients obtain the necessary skills for employment and/or job placement services;
- Ensure participants and colleagues receive written assessments, progress reports and evaluations as required by program standards;
- Responsible for ensuring that relevant statistical, program and participant reports are processed accurately, reflect the professional quality and adhere to strict deadlines;
- Participate in the review and development of systems to ensure quality services are provided to Open Door Group participants, employers, and other clients;
- Achieve monthly and annual goals and objectives and maintain acceptable standards of service quality;
- Comply with agency reporting requirements for programs and services;
- Set program meeting schedules and requirements, relationships and reporting duties at the team level;
- Build relationships with individuals and organizations to facilitate awareness of and responses to community-based needs;
- Any other duties assigned by the Manager, Programs and Services;
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATONS:
- Post-secondary degree in social work, counselling, coaching or any other related field is required. Master’s degree considered an asset;
- Mandatory Canadian Certified Rehabilitation Counsellor (CRC/CRCC) designation or other professional membership and designations;
- Registered Rehabilitation Professional (RRP) through the Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada;
- Certified Vocational Professional (CVP);
- Master’s certificate Vocational Professional (MCVP) through the College of Vocational Rehabilitation Professionals;
- Minimum of two (2) years direct vocational rehabilitation counselling or coaching experience mandatory;
- A clear, mandatory vulnerable sector check is required;
- Position requires travel; car is an asset
