LOCATION: 791 St. Clair Ave West, Toronto ON (Satellite office in Halton Region)

REPORTS TO: Supervisor, Mental Health and Counselling Services

CONTRACT TYPE: Contract (Union)

HOURS: 20 hours per week (Monday-Friday, with occasional evening and/or weekend hours)

RATE: $21.00 per hour

START DATE: Immediately

END DATE: 24 weeks from start date (not beyond March 31, 2022)

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

With over 38 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected non-profit with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. Skills for Change provides multi-sited employment, job skills, career exploration through mentoring and entrepreneurship, job development, mental health and wellness, language and settlement programs and services throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Mental Health and Counselling Services, the Outreach Assistant will support settlement and mental health project staff and work closely to support the design innovative workshops, develop new topics, conduct community outreach/promotion, project research, providing information and referrals to project participants and other tasks as required. This role will aim to understanding the mental health and wellness needs of newcomer refugee and immigrant clients and support the developments of community partnerships and interactive workshops and group sessions.

 

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

Provides administrative and clerical duties to support the project staff and clients;  

Assists in organizing virtual events; activities/seminars/workshops 

Outreach and project promotion; 

Support networking, social mentoring; 

Represent the agency at events, information booths and community events; 

Provide excellent customer service and represent the agency in a positive light to community members and partners;

Event planning, coordination and implementation; 

Support administrative needs (e.g. answering phones, responding to community inquiries, filing, photocopying etc.);Other tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

Excellent communication skills (written and verbal); 

Eager to work with newcomers and equity seeking communities; 

Strong organizational and communication skills;

Ability to work independently and in a team environment; 

Second language is considered an asset (French, Hindi, Farsi, Yoruba, Swahili, Chinese etc.); 

Ability to speak a language other than English and French is an asset; 

Strong grasp of working online, Gmail, Google docs, Excel, Prezi, etc.; 

Proficiency in Salesforce and iCARE would be an asset; 

Accurate, detail oriented.  

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

University degree or college diploma (or equivalent) in Social Work, Counselling Psychology or related field is required;

Require a minimum of 2 years of experience developing and delivering online and in-class learning and training programs;

Ability to secure a police Vulnerable Sector Check is mandatory and must be provided prior to starting employment;

Experience in group and individual counselling support work with families, with an emphasis on refugee/newcomer/immigrant clients  required; 

Strong interpersonal and client service skills as well as a positive attitude towards change; 

Initiative and persistence to complete tasks as well as excellent time management and teamwork skills; 

Experience working with vulnerable groups (low income, newcomers, women, youth, victims of abuse, etc.) sensitivity and  knowledge in dealing with different cultural and racial backgrounds and with special needs; 

Relevant direct experience working with newcomers, equity seeking communities.
