GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
With 38 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected non-profit charity with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. We offer a range of accelerated programs including mentoring, employment, settlement, language training together with specialized programs for skilled trades, women, and youth. We have 5 locations across the GTA and serve 16,000 clients annually. We believe we are in the best position to provide thought leadership through evidence-based programming, impact stories and proactive policy advocacy using knowledge mobilization products.
PROGRAM NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Outreach Assistant will work under the supervision of the Associate Director, Programs and Strategic Initiatives. This post requires a high degree of innovation, creativity and personal initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an understanding of stakeholder engagement, and utilizing public relations expertise and campaigns to inform and influence critical discussions, while drawing lessons and best practises from difficult discussions as part of various interviews and in the Diverse Women of Canada event funded by the Government of Canada (Canadian Heritage). The incumbent will support the Diverse Women of Canada event and roll out a number of communication materials and campaigns in support of the critical discussions on diversity, equity and inclusion that facilitate building bridges to promote intercultural understanding; promoting equal opportunity for individuals of all origins; and promoting citizenship, civic engagement and a healthy democracy. The incumbent will also manage and execute communication tasks related to the project, explore new avenues to secure increased engagement and amplify the objectives for the Diverse Women of Canada including (but not limited to):
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Draft and develop a range of communication materials showcasing the Diverse Women of Canada project including articles and blogs featuring 20 racialized women and their stories interlinked with key thematic topics.
- Explore new avenues to secure increased engagement and amplify the objectives of the Diverse Women of Canada project.
- Create a stakeholder outreach plan engaging different community leaders, partners as well as the Black and People of Colour (BPoC) community to engage in discussions and create opportunities for ongoing dialogue, collaborative learning and reflection to build new knowledge and inform action.
- Conduct research on various thematic topics and discussion areas, case stories on the cultural, ethnic and religious aspects involved, related data on key information and follow up with networks and contacts on additional information required through Q&As, surveys etc.,
- Create an event and multimedia outreach plan to widely engage the BPoC community as well as the general public.
- Secure enhanced visibility across media channels including the social media platforms and design a media universe to support outreach plans.
- Set up and follow up on meetings with different community leaders and partners to facilitate community buy-in and engagement.
- Support consultations and interviews with the 20 diverse BPoC women identified to speak at the event and participate in the multimedia campaign.
- Organize virtual debriefing meetings and series of interviews with the confirmed 20 BPoC women.
- Provide creative input and oversight into the production of visual website information, promotional videos, graphics, visual appealing storytelling etc., all in line with the funder acknowledgement guidelines, to be used to promote the event and the project via local community media platforms, social media and email eblasts.
- Support with logistical follow ups with secured keynote speakers and the emcee.
- Map potential partners that can amplify the project outcomes.
- Coordinate video production and scripts in line with funder acknowledgements.
- Create and manage event run-sheets for all technical teams, agendas and program notes.
- Coordinate event testing, backend technical support and dry-ins via the selected virtual platform as well as post event evaluation and wrap up.
- Participate in team meetings, staff meetings, and all other Board and Committee meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong all-round communication skills especially writing, editing and proofreading, and the ability to summarise complex research information in clear, non-specialist language for a wide range of communication formats.
- Written and spoken skills in a language other than English, particularly French would be an advantage;
- Strong public relations skills, stakeholder engagement, campaign delivery and creativity.
- Good knowledge of the development sector with a bias of strategic communications for non-profits;
- Knowledge and familiarity of organizations involved in community initiatives, the BPoC community and media is essential along with a clear understanding of research communications and impact;
- Experience using web-based tools for communication such as Microsoft Office suite, WordPress, MailChimp, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Sprout (social media management), Google Suite, Zoom, Slack etc.,
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collectively in a diverse and dynamic team environment;
- Strong planning and organization skills with ability to prioritize.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in journalism, communications or relevant subject area and experience, as well as highly developed communication skills, drafting skills and familiarity with a range of media tools.
- Direct experience with stakeholder engagement and public relations is preferred as well as excellent command and use of Information Technology tools relevant to information dissemination and retrieval (e.g., search engines).
