HOURS: 22.5 hours per week (Monday – Friday, with occasional evening and/or weekend hours)
PAY RATE: $29.90 per hour
START DATE: Immediately

 

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
With 40 years of operations, Skills for Change (SfC) is a highly respected non-profit charity with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. We offer a range of accelerated programs including mentoring, employment, settlement, language training together with specialized programs for trades, women, seniors, and youth.

PROGRAM NATURE AND SCOPE:
To support newcomers in their path to improving their English communication that will lead to employment in their profession or related to their profession. The incumbent will deliver the Enhanced Language Training (ELT) component of the program toincrease the participant’s employability skills. Delivery will be a combination of online and classroom training. This position will also coach participants with enhancing their workplace communication skills and awareness of workplace culture leading to possible connection with employers and /or job leads.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver instruction to English language learners with CLB 6+ in accordance with Canadian Language Benchmarks, specific program curriculum, and other guidelines set out by SfC and its funder.
  • Develop appropriate lesson plans, teaching methodologies, materials and activities based on the experiences, social contexts, and settlement goals of learners.
  • Using CLB assessment practices and principles, evaluate progress, and promote them to the next level as required.
  • Collaborate with other staff within SfC to ensure clients’ success and integration in programming .
  • Arrange for guest speakers, fieldtrips, and other computerized/on-line learning activities to facilitate learning.
  • Start classes on time, and adhere to the scheduled breaks and dismissal time.
  • Monitor attendance, follow up with absent learners or are at risk of dropping out. Inform Management if attendance drops.
  • Support outreach/recruitment efforts through providing input, encouraging referrals from existing learners, and supporting recruitment activities.
  • Monitor the settlement needs of learners and refer them to SfC services and programs as appropriate.
  • Submit curriculum outlines, lesson plans, attendance records, and statistical and program reports on time.
  • Maintain program resources (e.g., computers, instructional materials, and books) and ensure they are in good condition.
  • Participate in regular team and agency meetings and events as required.
  • Monitor student’s progress through observation and the assignment of regular performance tasks and tests.
  • Promote interactive language learning in a classroom setting.
  • Maintain student client data, attendance, transportation, and proficiency forms, and other student statistics as required.
  • Prepare monthly narrative report and end of term reports on student and class activities.
  • Assist in the evaluation of services and present solutions to enhance service delivery.
  • Execute other duties and tasks as required by Management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s or bachelor’s degree in Adult Education is required.
  • A University degree or college diploma in career planning and employment counselling is an asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience developing and delivering online and in-class learning training programs is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of providing career planning and employment counselling is required.
  • A completed TESL/TESOL certificate recognized by TESL Canada required.
  • Registered with the Ontario College of Teachers would be an asset.
  • Formal teaching/instructor experience with adult learning principles, techniques, and pedagogy methodology is required
  • Solid knowledge of school programs, community resources, and services in the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Excellent facilitation and employment counselling skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, ability to deliver PowerPoint presentations.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce and iCARE would be an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and client service skills as well as a positive attitude towards change.
  • Initiative and persistence to complete tasks as well as excellent time management and teamwork skills.
  • Critical thinking skills and resourcefulness in meeting clients’ employment support needs.
  • Experience working with youth, sensitivity, and knowledge in dealing with youth from different cultural and racial backgrounds and youth with special needs.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of issues of concern to immigrants and refugees.
  • The ability to secure a Police Vulnerable Sector Check is mandatory and must be provided before starting employment.
