Skills for Change employment programs and professional development courses are designed to address the specific needs of job seekers and working professionals who want to improve their career prospects.

If you bring experience and education from outside Canada, you will benefit from specialized employment bridgingskills training and language programs that can accelerate your move to employment and transfer your experience to work in Canada.

The programs featured here are designed to lead to employment. They include information, referral and assessment, workshops, resume development and job placement support. We can also connect you with a mentor who will help you develop a resumé that employers are looking for.     Employment Ontario offers a range of employment services, providing resources and supports that respond to both the career and employment needs of individuals and the skilled labour need of employers. Services include:

     
    • Information & Referral: for training opportunities such as Second Career, Apprenticeship, GED, Literacy and Basic Skills, Bridge Training programs and other Government services. Client Service Planning and Coordination: individual needs assessments, assistance with referrals, access to education, training or other community services
    • Job Search: Support for a successful job search including career exploration, job search tools, professional communication, Canadian workplace culture, group workshops, one-on-one counselling, coaching and individual employment support
    • Job Matching, Placement and Incentives: Matching of skills with employment opportunities. Placement into employment and or on-the-job training, job test and hire, work experience and community volunteer placements. Financial incentives for employers to provide on-the-job training, apprenticeship, work experience opportunities and trial placements

    • Interview Skills: This workshop will teach you everything you need to know to prepare for and effectively perform at an interview. We discuss everything from how to dress, how to answer typical questions to the importance of asking questions at the interview and follow up,
    • Resume Targeting: One size resume doesn’t fit all, you need to customize your resume for each job you apply for and this workshop will show you how to write a resume that will position you as a good candidate for the job. We talk about the different parts of the resume and the role they play. We also discuss the importance of accomplishment statements and thinking like the employer. Please come with a job in mind and be able to tell the group three reasons why you are the right candidate for the job.
    • Using Social Media to Find Work: This is networking 2.0- increasingly companies are using social media (Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter) to recruit new employees. This workshop teaches you ways to make sure that your online presence is positive and getting seen. Use social media to get job leads, be seen by recruiters and build your network.
    • Cover Letter & Impact Letter: Create your presentation letter which is a professional way to introduce yourself and summarize your credentials and learn how to use an impact letter as a marketing tool to make a good impression to a potential employer. Includes your “FBB” – Find a gap, fill up the missing areas with your skills, Benefits, how you will contribute with your expertise, and Bring ideas, what can you create to help.
    • Standard Resume Formatting (hands-on): This workshop will provide you with the basic knowledge on how to format and prepare a standard resume using the basic tools on Microsoft Word.
    • Interactive Networking: Learn the basic techniques and strategies on how to effectively introduce yourself to a potential employer. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to practice and make your first step to network in a real setting. Get ideas on how to request an informational interview and have a networking action plan. In this.
    • Mentoring Info Session: Are you a newcomer professional looking to start your career here in Canada but lacking connections in your field. Find out how Mentoring can help and if it is right for you.
    • Getting a Survival Job NOW!! : Need a job right away- Bills to pay and it doesn’t matter what kind of job it is as long as it starts immediately, Come to this session for leads on jobs available right away
    • Informational Interview: Informational interview is not a job interview rather; it is an interview to collect information about a job, career field, industry or company that you are looking to work with.  It can help you build your network and get valuable information to make your job search more effective
    • Business Portfolio Development: Portfolios are an important tool to show your work history and your potential to a new employer. Learn how to showcase your work to get better results in your job search.
    • Employment Preparation: We provide newcomers with the right insight into Canadian workplace culture, strategic networking techniques, hidden job market, employer expectations, occupation-specific research and leveraging social media for your job search. They will also learn an overall understanding of numerous methods which they can use to successful job search in Canada.
