Hands-On Learning

The practical component of the course delivered by Computek will give participants real-life experience working through scenarios where they will be tasked with putting their education to work by responding to a cyberattack. This combination of theoretical, vocational, technical, and experiential education will make the graduates of the Newcomer Cybersecurity Talent Pod program particularly appealing to potential employers.

Program delivery will run the course of 16 weeks, including synchronous and guided learning. The first 14 weeks will include 8 hours of lectures per week, 4 hours of hands-on simulations per week including both guided and self-directed learning. The content will be accessible via a dedicated learning management system containing backend analytics and engagement metrics. Students will be given progressive feedback through periodic weekly quizzes – this will allow for instructors to identify areas of improvement and additional study. The final 2 weeks will include 4 hours of live exam training with on-demand, one-on-one consultations.

Employer Partnerships & Work Placement

Towards the end of the course, SfC and Computek will coordinate with participants and employer partners as needed to ensure all employment placement objectives are met. A dedicated support hub with video and text resources will be provided.

Wrap Around Support

Additionally, SfC will deliver wrap-around services such as language courses, mental health services, and settlement support, including soft skills development such as interpersonal, interviewing, and resume-writing, for those that need it.

Students will develop practical skills in the following practices:

IDENTIFYING WEB EXPLOITS: Students will learn to identify common and unique web exploits and be familiar with concepts such as SQL injections. Along with the principles of social engineering and reconnaissance so students will understand the contextual drivers behind common exploits.

AUDITS AND ASSESSMENTS: Given the number of security frameworks such as NIST, ISO, COBIT, students will learn to map security infrastructure and processes. The modules will cover many frameworks and train students to work with both top-down and bottom-up security programs.

FORENSIC ANALYSIS: Along with identifying common attacks, students will be able to conduct surface level forensics and learn about memory dumps and packet analysis of PCAP files. Students will also learn the basics of network and traffic analysis with the ability to read logs and identity anomalous patterns.

CRYPTOGRAPHY: Decrypting encrypted strings using cryptography, including Caesar cipher, Substitution crypto, and others, is an attractive skill in cybersecurity. Given the rise of quantum and AI driven attacks, students will be exposed to modern cryptographic standards.

REVERSE ENGINEERING: Typically requires learners to examine a particular binary file, such as an APK, PE, or ELF file. Decompilation, disassembly through static or dynamic analysis, or other methods of reverse engineering will be taught through real-life scenarios to capture a key successfully.

GENERAL ANALYSIS AND EXPOSURE TO TOOLS: Students will be able to identify and utilize commonly used technology stacks by security professionals and be familiar with common operating systems, tools and techniques – like Kali Linux, Arch Linux Black Arc.
