Course Overview

Your success in landing and keeping a job in today’s competitive market depends on your ability
to communicate effectively, both in the spoken and written word. Business Writing will help you
do just that in 35 hours.
Today’s business professionals must be able to communicate effectively through the written word if
they are going to succeed in today’s business environment.
If you want to improve your business writing skills, then this course is ideal for you.

  • In this course, you will learn business writing techniques by creating different kinds of memos,business letters and reports.
  • Grammar, spelling, punctuation, word order, sentences, transitions, paragraphs, proper tone and style will be emphasized.
  • Participants will apply this knowledge using Microsoft Word.
  • In addition, you’ll learn basic writing techniques such as how to use active voice, how to apply the 6 C’s of writing, how to avoid using jargon or offensive phrases, and how to write with a YOU attitude!
  • You’ll also learn about the proper formats for letters, memos, emails, and proposals.
  • You will learn to apply the rules of grammar

Completion

  • Certificate of Completion
  • Tax Receipt Form for tuition fees for courses taken in the calendar year. To qualify, the fees must be more than $100 for the year.

Prerequisite

Basic knowledge of Windows and intermediate level of English.

Alka Kumar (PhD) has been an educator for long years. With her interest in ongoing learning, she has recently completed her doctoral work in an interdisciplinary Peace and Conflict Studies Program, her area of specialization being Migration and Labor Market Integration, especially in relation to people of color.

With her previous background as a university instructor, she has years of experience teaching English and Literary Studies. She has expertise in developing and facilitating job skills training workshops; providing individualized career transition and employment pathways planning; and in writing reports and grant proposals.

She focuses upon storytelling techniques to help program participants learn writing skills (in a variety of forms). The objective is to support them not only in achieving their self-improvement and personal wellness goals, but also to prepare them for professional success.

 

James Denas (FCGmA, HRD CDG) has taught Business Writing Essentials at Skills for Change since 2010.

He is a freelance writer and has worked as a news reader, interviewer, and documentary host. The three-part documentary he narrated, Death of a President: the Moment and the Controversy, won the 2014 bronze medal at The New York International Festivals.

A gemmologist and Antwerp-certified diamond grader, James is the owner of Designed by You Custom Jewellery.

He also narrates audiobooks and is the host of CNIB’s Unbound podcast.  His latest interview is with Bruce Meyer, author of the national bestseller, The Golden Thread, A Reader’s Journey through the Great Books.
